My Favorite Skincare Obsession: Face Masks

When it comes to face masks, I really just can’t help myself. Its my favorite skincare item, and the thing I always want to treat myself to. There are face masks for every occasion. Dry skin, too much skin texture, acne, clogged pores, and even dull skin; there’s a mask for that! Currently I have several masks on rotation. They are primarily clarifying, hydrating, and exfoliating masks.

Even though I have dry skin, at least once a week I need a good clarifying mask session. Especially in the summer. Sunscreen really does a number on my pores and skin texture. When I need a good pore clean-out, these are the masks I turn to.

L to R: Yesto Tomato mud mask, boscia luminzing black mask, Being by Sanctuary mango mud mask, Fresh Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask

These masks all basically do the same thing. The bosica is a peel off mask(and rips out my peach fuzz, ouch!), and the Sanctuary mask goes on really warm and stays that way, but doesn’t dry down. The Yesto and Fresh masks are similar (dry-down mud masks), but the Fresh masks is better. It dries down faster, but doesn’t dry-out my skin like the Yesto mask does.

While I do use a physical exfoliator sometimes, I try to stick with chemical exfoliators since they’re gentler. I turn to these masks when my skin starts to feel grubby.

L to R: Aveeno 60 second in-shower facial, Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial, Being Sanctuary pomelo peel-off mask.

These three masks are very different from each other. The Aveeno is gentle, mildly exfoliating, and a great price (also a large size for a mask). I leave this one on for longer than 60 seconds! The Drunk Elephant mask is intense. Yes it exfoliates extremely well, but the high acid content (tartaric, lactic, citric, and salicylic) makes this a slightly irritating mask. I use this mask sparingly and not often. The Sanctuary mask isn’t the best to be honest. It smells strongly of alcohol and doesn’t dry down fast (which is weird considering the higher alcohol content).

L to R: Caudalie moisterizing mask, Kiko Hyrda Pro mask, Avene soothing moisture mask, Fresh Rose face mask, Perricone MD Cocoa Moisture mask.

My skin tends to be dry. So, for me, moisturizing masks are a must. All of these masks (except for the Fresh Rose mask) are creamy in texture and dry down most of the way. They all basically do the same thing, although the Perricone mask smells divine, just like chocolate. If you weren’t craving chocolate before you use this mask, you certainly will afterwards. The Fresh face mask is a gel consistency and reminds me of the Peter Thomas Roth gel masks. This mask drys down much quicker and smells so nice. All of these masks advise leaving on for 5-10, but I always leave them on for at least 20. Don’t know if this actually hydrates my skin more, but I figure it can’t hurt.

L to R: Sunday Riley sulfur acne treatment mask, Kiko Sublime Youth mask (retinol), Fresh Black Tea Instant Perfecting mask

These three masks don’t fall into the other categories; they’re a bit more specific in what they claim to do. The Sunday Riley mask is high in sulfur and zinc and helps calm down acne breakouts. It is smelly, but does seem to help my skin when things get crazy. The Kiko mask is basically a moisturizing mask with a tiny bit of retinol. I don’t think it actually helps signs of skin aging. The black tea mask by Fresh is interesting. It goes on very tingly and stays that way. I don’t think it actually helps “perfect” my skin (seriously, what does that even mean?) but its a good hydrating masks that feels refreshing.

Aaaand that’s my mask collection! What are some of your favorite masks? Some of you least favorite?
