End of the Matte Liquid Lipstick Trend?

Ah, makeup trends. They come and go, don’t they? From loads of blue eyeshadow in the 80s to the pencil thin eyebrows of the 90s (also a trend in the 30s), there are so many trends we look back on and shake our heads at. Lately I’ve been wondering if matte liquid lipstick will be one of these. Matte liquid lipstick exploded onto the makeup scene several years ago. It seems like every makeup brand had their own line of liquid lipsticks. Some are better then others, but all work on the same basic principle of a dry matte color that stays on. I, like so many other makeup lovers have my own collection.

(Mostly pinks!)

While I still wear these liquid lipsticks sometimes, I find myself reaching for a creamier lipstick lately. My lips are usually dry, and liquid lipsticks do a serious number on my lips. I have to exfoliate and wear lots of lip balm after wearing liquid lipstick. This makes me wonder if the same holds true for other liquid lipstick wearers? Is the additional upkeep worth the longer staying power?

There’s no denying that lots of makeup brands have cut down on releasing new liquid lipsticks, if they still are at all. Even as late as last year, you could hardly walk through a Sephora or Ulta without spotting dozens of liquid lipsticks. Now? Not as much. Lip gloss is on the rise.

I don’t think liquid lipsticks will go away completely. They serve a purpose. Sometimes you just need something that will stay on your lips for a long time. But as for day to day wear, I think it’s slowing down. Maybe liquid lipsticks will be like fake eyelashes; nice for special occasions, or when you’re feeling extra, but not something you wear everyday.

What do you think? Will liquid lipsticks make a comeback? Or are they going the way of the dinosaur?
